all bookmarks are gone :( #8437

[bug report] i just lost all my bookmarks. restarted my device, opened maps.me and found out that only one bookmark set remains, all the others are gone. they are nowhere to be found in the app folders. i lost thousands of bookmarks.

version: 8.1.3 google phone: HUAWEI LUA-L21 android 5.1

previously i could find the bookmarks in my phone storage\MapsWithMe directory. on my phone file browser i now only see 3 files, where i used to have 25. when opening on my computer, i would first see all the missing files, but they had no content and their size was 0 bytes. now, after restarting the device again, the files are also not showing up on my computer.

does maps.me store any backups hidden somewhere? is there any hope of restoring the bookmarks? and what could be the cause of this issue?

@Alexuser1 so you're saying there's no hope getting the bookmarks back? there isn't any internal backup that maps.me makes? :(

i did move the app to the sd card (not recently, however, and it was always fine). why would that affect the issue?

could the issue be caused by a fault in the app itself? i am using ES task manager to clean apps cache from time to time, but i've been using it for ages and it never caused issues. could it be that some change in the recent version of maps.me makes ES think that the .kml are cache?

and how do you explain that some bookmars sets were left untouched (seems to be the biggest one + the default one that was being auto-selected when adding new bookmarks), while all the others are gone?

Sorry, Maps.Me has no backup mechanism by itself. We are currently working on a crossplatform backup solution for the user's bookmarks.

Also we can't even predict cleaner programs, they tend to have regularly updated white and blacklists along with the main logic. When some problem become massive we investigate specific cleaner and contact app publisher.

If you can't find missed KMLs on any of your SDs/main drive (there can be a tricky bug with drive location switching) it is nothing we can do to help you at this point, I'm sorry.

@burivuh ok, how about my other questions? about the potential cause of this issue and how moving the app to the sd card (suggested in the linked guide) might affect this.

Have had exactly the same problem. Been travelling all year, went to add a new bookmark and the only option was "My Places" with no bookmarks. No changes in my usage, just an empty bookmarks - very disappointing

@crookers353 @rrrafalsz if u moved to the sd card, try searching there for the MapsMe ditectory, maybe you have some luck. Sad to see your loss :(

@crookers353 What do you mean by "exactly the same"? Did it happen with the same phone, OS and app version?

Could you please inspect the contents of your MapsWithMe/ and MapsWithMe/bookmarks/ directories? Can you see a *.kmb file several kilobytes large there?

Hello,

After actualization of my Android system some of my bookmarks are gone (of the last two years).. I found them in my archives as .kmb files which are not supported by maps.me. Been trying to convert them to .kml format but no luck with that. Could anyone PLEASE help me to solve this issue? I don't know how else I could add them back. Help!

Hello! I have that, I have found *.kmb files that are bookmarks that I had in my maps.me. I just cannot find a way to put them back. Been converting them to different formats and trying to išpūtė them but no luck. Could you please help me?

Hello, MAPS.ME is not opensource app anymore. This repo last modification was more than year ago, they had several releases after that and maybe changed bookmarks behavior. You can try opensource fork Organic Maps which supports kmb. https://organicmaps.app/ https://github.com/organicmaps/organicmaps
