Additional Transportation Agencies. #23

JRHutson commented 9 years ago

Look for data sources for other transportation agencies besides LA Metro. I'm thinking of things like the Big Blue Bus in Santa Monica, Foothill Transportation in the SGV, etc...

If someone wants to look for additional agencies and create individual issues for each that can be assigned to people that would be helpful as well.

@thekaveman posts transportation data for Big Blue Bus on the City of Santa Monica Github https://github.com/cityofsantamonica

For Big Blue Bus data, http://gtfs.bigbluebus.com is the primary resource.

Here we have the current static GTFS file, as well as the current dynamic GTFS data (e.g. vehicle positions and trip updates/schedule adherence) updated about every minute.

Our GitHub repository for GTFS serves as more of an archive.

Thanks Kaveman! The static files are what we need for this project but I'm sure people at Maptime would be interested in the dynamic feed.

What size region? Los Angeles County only, or larger? A few links are available to get started, but some calling around may be needed. Creating static data based on descriptions can work, depending on the need. See http://www.apta.com/resources/links/unitedstates/Pages/CaliforniaTransitLinks.aspx, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_small_Southern_California_transit_agencies

John, That Wikipedia list looks awesome. I've been wondering whether we should include the actual transportation data in the Repo or just links in a readme file. Many of the datasets are huge and may not be useful to all but a minority of users. Any thoughts?

Oh, and scope wise we're wanting to focus on LA County.
