This issue is important because sensitive documents should not be indiscriminately uploaded.

Wrote a bash script for users: https://github.com/rsvp/victor/blob/master/bin/proofexist

If you think it belongs in your repo, tell me where, and I would be happy to push.

Don't worry, documents are not uploaded even if you use the web interface! Your tool seems useful though, feel free to make a pull request. Thanks!
