Yes, they currently need a .mfa, .fa, or .fna extension and need to be opened from the Import Alignment dialog. Other extensions can easily be added in the next version. The File::Open dialog, however, is specifically for Gingr workspace files (this can also be more clearly labelled in the next version).
For single files, I suggest we simplify things to a single open dialog without suffix restrictions that auto determines the file type. If file type is unclear, a dialog can pop asking the user to choose a supported type. If a file type is chosen that requires simultaneous loading of a reference file, the interface should prompt for that as well. Suggest emulating how a tool like Geneious handles loading alignments.
My core SNP alignment files (aligned FASTA) are usually named with .aln or .afa extension but 'gingr' seems to be a bit controlling with file extensions it will allow with the File::Open dialogue box.
Any change you can add these extensions?
