Kernel Update 2.6.24 and beyond #101

Open GoogleCodeExporter opened 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Hi,

I have a 2.6.24 kernel for the str8100/9100 devices and would like to test a
new kernel. Unfortunately using uBoot tftp loader hangs my home lan (starts a
Flood and my network switches kill the port)

Any hints on booting this zImage ?

@Stefan

I've enabled NFS support and CIFS. But I'm not sure if those modules will work.
So can you make some kind of testing? Because I haven't a windows machine

Hi. There are some problem in samba. (snakeos-V1.3.2-20120216-from-snake.bin)

I can't move or copy large size of file with samba.
(When moving the files with samba, the explorer stops in few seconds.)

I've tested in samba and samba3(using "chroot debian").

Well, loading the cifs module lets me mount remote shares from the chroot.
I haven't tried nfs yet.

Could you try this samba package?

I'm not getting these timeouts anymore with that one. You can also get the same
effect by adding "use sendfile = true" to smb.conf (probably requires samba 3).

I still haven't figured out the root cause for these timeouts though.

I did a quick comparison of the new samba package under the two kernels. With
2.6.16 I'm getting about 7 MB/s but only about 5 MB/s with 2.6.36. The 2.6.36
speed is suspicously close to what I get with sendfile disabled.

Thanks.

Today, I've tested samba package. (samba3-3.6.1-1 and samba3-3.6.3-1)
But, I could not solve the problem.

Too bad.

I'll put up a build with SG disabled in the nic driver. That seems to reduce
the amount of memory used by network buffers. That helped here, but so did
enabling sendfile..

The attached image and patch have SG disabled. It makes samba work here but
hurts transfer speed.

Is it safe to flash with this firmware? i havent done serial connection yet, so
it would be hard for me to unbrick the ns-330...
I wonder if this firmware deals with buggy nic driver - on my machine there is
huge memory leak and i must restart it regularly.

I don't know if anyone ran it on that yet. So I wouldn't recommend it.

So I have to make my serial cable and boot by tftp. Luckily i have CA-42 cable.

It works, I think the system is more responsive under heavy load now. I dont
see memory leaking, but it has only 12 hours uptime. My old USB 1.1 hub stopped
working - it is recognized, but:

usb 2-2: config 1 has an invalid descriptor of length 0, skipping remainder of
the config
usb 2-2: config 1 interface 0 altsetting 0 has 0 endpoint descriptors,
different from the interface descriptor's value: 1
hub 2-2:1.0: bad descriptor, ignoring hub
hub: probe of 2-2:1.0 failed with error -5

And in Debian screen does not work:

Cannot access '(unreachable)/dev/ttyp0': No such file or directory

Df in Debian shows some errors too:

df: `/proc/bus/usb': No such file or directory
df: `/dev/shm': No such file or directory

I have tried to unrar one big rar file, and unrar stopped after maybe 800 megs.
In logs there were no sign of oom killer or anything.

Transmission is stopping irregularly, but i have cron script to start it
again...

Could you please post cofs module for the 2.6.36 kernel? I am satisfied with
this kernel, but I need cifs module to mount external shares...
