Snake 1.3.2 - Transmission high cpu usage #124

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. The CPU usage is about 100% during download of torrents (about 3) and the 
web interface goes very slow

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
SNAKE OS V1.3.2 (20101130), kernel 2.6.16-gazineu

I think I have the same issue .. however I also get str8100_spi "process" going 
to 100% for long amount of time ... I'm not sure what is the trigger and what 
is the precise role of that process .. I think its a kernel process for the 
chipset control ?

I don't know if it's a transmission problem... if you pause all the torrents, 
the CPU usage remains at 100%. You can try to stop transmission service and 
sometimes the NAS is still hard to access. I think it's a NTFS-related problem, 
or related to the web manager of transmission itself. Sometimes I can't even 
get to monitor page of the NAS!
I'll try to change swap settings (as can be found on dealextreme-nas forums, to 
creat a swap partition), but I am not very positive about it.

I also see this 100% usage but wouldnt expect anything less for £20.
Having 1 or 9 torrents makes no difference to the responsiveness of the unit 
(wlx652). Stopping transmission restores ram usage 98%, swap 0 to 4% and cpu to 
around 4%

Will follow this issue to see if im wrong.

Well, if I have anything that I think can perform better, I'll work to get this 
performance... 
But well, returning to the point: I am using a pendrive (ext3, gonna format to 
ext2) for SWAP, and a 160GB hard drive with two NTFS partitions.
The thing is, I discovered that the hard drive I was using had one partition 
with a minor problem related to the ntfs MFT or other corruption that wasn't 
detected before. After I unmounted it, the CPU usage dropped to 5%.

I mitigate this issue by executing a defrag over my hard disk.

Try the JkDefrag (http://www.kessels.nl/JkDefrag/), if your hard disk is on 
NTFS format.

Until last few days I had only 1,5 Mbps internet connection at home, using the 
NAS and 10-15 files with not to much CPU usage.

Now I upgraded the internet connection to 15Mbps, and now the CPU usage is 
always more than 90%... this overheat the processor and make it stop working 
and the only solution is to restart the NAS by pulling the plug.

I think we have reached the processing limits of this little guy...

I have disassembled and put a small heat sink on top of processor, let´s see 
how log it will work...

After 10 minutes the I can´t touch the heat sink for more than 5 seconds. this 
guy is really sweating!!!

What do you think? water cooling? :) LOL

Hi I am also getting 100% cpu usage with transmission on (v1.3.2). I originally 
thought it was due to the ntfs HDD I was using so I swapped to a ext3 drive but 
its still happening. Has there been any developments on this? Has anybody had 
any of these crap out due to overheating?.

I was having the CPU issue, also. I reformatted to ext3, from ntfs, and stopped 
using transmission (now using ktorrent on laptop then transferring via smb) and 
the problems seem to be resolved. Also disabled all unnecessary services, i.e. 
web server, telnet, ddns, etc. I think we're just asking too much of this 
little thing...

Damn, same issue here, if add to much files on transmission he freeze and 
interface get several minutes to acess. Please someone do a solution xD

desative the FTP/SSH and now I download simultaneous torrents normal

If you are using NTFS, try to format as Ext3... this has worked for me.

....And, if you want to mount a Ext partition at Windows, use  Ext2fsd

If you haven't already try limiting the download speed. 500KB/s is a good value 
to keep things responsive.

The rpi will cost about the same, maybe a bit more if you add a case, power 
supply and shipping. I'm looking forward to toying around with one too though.

A 500GB HD NTFS for Data and Transmission Files

My Transmission service work for a time and the service stop about 10 minutes 
later.

I dont want to bleave that high CPU usage is normal...

I only have one single 500Gb drive in NTFS

You could try to reformat the drive using snake. Depending on what you are 
doing NTFS can be much slower under snake.

Well, as i see, it makes transmission too slow! When i start torrend on my 
desktop, i get 1.5 mB/s, if i stop it and start it on NAS, i get 200-300 kB/s. 
Need to do something with it. I have a transmission on my satellite reciever, 
it's much faster.

I've turned off every service I am not using. The only things left running are 
OPKG, Samba, Swapfile and Transmission.  Only just done this (I was running 
MiniDNLA but that seems to eat processor resources).  My symptoms were slow 
access, failure of swap file, my backup disk unmounting and loads of 'atomic' 
issues with torrents.  As I said, early days but I will post back here if 
things stay stable.

I was a bit naive when I bought this mini server along with 2 2Tb external 
drives.  I was expecting 200+ Mb/s (I can hear you all laughing now and you'd 
be right).   I'm not used to the linux way of doing things either, but getting 
there.

But, as others have said here - this is a low power, inexpensive (and very 
importantly, DIY) server - you could get better performance from a ready made 
device, at ten times the price and one tenth of the fun!

The above worked for me as well. I turned off DDNS and sftp/sshd and it all got 
better.
I'm using v1.3.2 20101130 and NTFS on the 8GB pendrive basically so I could 
pull it out and plug it into my win7 cos transfer was so slow. I may try Ext3 
and FTP again now that its running better. 
Thanks to Robson and paul.mul. 
I think the snakeos is excellent especially compared to my original firmware. 
This little unit is great for those torrents that are coming down really slow. 
It saves me having my big poot on all night.
