Since the wiki mentions that comparability with openPMD is desirable, I wanted to mention this repository: https://github.com/openPMD/openPMD-validator
There is a Python script (checkOpenPMD_h5.py) which allows to automatically check compliance with the openPMD standard. The usage is:
./checkOpenPMD_h5.py -i example_file.h5
