Improve formatting of extremely old dates #108

Go to the 'Extreme Timescales' demo at http://b.timefire.com/showcase/.  Date 
range and tick 
labels should use more intuitive formatting.  For example, the date range is 
currently formatted as 
"-796545 - 2004".  For extreme timescales, a better formatting might be 
"796546BC - 2004AD".  
Or if astronomical year numbering is preferred, "-796545 to 2004".  In any 
case, the formatting 
strategy needs to be variable w.r.t. the domain interval.
