Look into ie8 and see if there's a better option than the Flash canvas
default.  
 - is the ie8 VML much faster?  Fast enough to be interactive? 
 - is there any argument for a silverlight canvas in addition to a flash one?
 - is there any word on ie support for an actual canvas element?

There is no native canvas element support in IE8.
