When trying to use the widget by including 
http://api.timepedia.org/widget/chronoscope.js
the page goes blank after it fails to load #########.cache.js from my server. 
Is this
the same issue? My understanding is that this prevents the "just include a 
script and
use microformats" use case

The widget should work fine, for instance look at the source for 
http://timepedia.org/chronoscope/microformats -- this issue is about the google 
gadget caching proxies vs 
GWT's nocache approach when using http://api.timepedia.org/gadget/ or 
http://api.timepedia.org/gadget/gadget.xml
