7 years ago It's definitely possible. Indeed, it's easy to find the nickname strings in the savegame. However, it needs more research since villagers remember previous players (even from other towns) and their nicknames.
I can't devote time for this right now, but I'll leave the issue open just in case anyone can contribute to this :-)
It seems that there is no option to change the nicknames that the villagers give you. I noticed this because I changed a villager, and the new villager used the nickname the old villager had for me, even though I checked the "set to default" option when changing the villager. I'm ok without it, since it can be changed through normal gameplay, but you may want to add that option in a future release. Thanks!
