Printers Broken #24

Closed klwadland closed 3 years ago

klwadland commented 4 years ago

From Hillary: "I tried to print on flamingo and every page got jammed and did not print fully. I tried to print on baby oreo and nothing printed after waiting two hours."

Neither printer is low on ink according to their logs. I tried to run a cleaning cycle and a test page remotely for both printers. From what I can tell Baby Oreo printed the test page successfully (and hopefully the cleaning too, but I can't see that remotely from the online logs) and Flamingo either didn't print either because it was already jammed or jammed again based on what I can tell from the online logs. According to Baby Oreo's online color log, aside from the test page, it looks like Mara was able to print (or tried to print) some stuff at about 2:15 pm today. I have Hillary checking that she has the correct IP address for Baby Oreo since it changed in the last year. Also having her try printing a different paper (if she didn't already) as some pdfs the printers don't like for whatever reason and either won't print them or take forever.

Errors that were thrown by one of the printers today (I can't ID which one--the same error log comes up for each printer when I ask to see it via my desktop):

E [13/Jul/2020:13:13:41 -0400] [Client 14] Returning IPP client-error-not-possible for Cancel-Job (ipp://localhost/jobs/259) from localhost. E [13/Jul/2020:13:17:48 -0400] [Job 258] Remote host did not accept data file (32)

Thank you for checking the logs and doing some debug work up front! I'll make this a priority and take a look the next time I head into lab (if not tomorrow, definitely Monday). I've reached out to Hillary for more information in the meantime.

Great! Sounds good. Thanks for making this a priority!

Update from Hillary: "The baby oreo test page printed fine, but the flamingo test page jammed. Thanks for asking about the IP address for baby oreo, I had the wrong one set up. I've just tried printing something with the updated IP address and it seems to be printing fine, just a bit slow."

Flamingo still needs to be fixed, and as long as Baby Oreo keeps working (fingers crossed) that one is fine.

Hooray! I'm glad at least one of them works. I'll take a look at Flamingo on Monday.

klwadland commented 4 years ago

Any luck isolating the issue with Flamingo?

Still working on it. My current hypothesis is that a sensor broke in the paper delivery assembly. I'm going to test this by removing it from flamingo and putting it inside babyoreo. If babyoreo fails in the same way, that's very likely the part that we need to replace.

klwadland commented 4 years ago

Thanks for the update. Good luck with the sensor!

Alright, so I tried swapping the fusers before swapping the paper delivery assemblies. Babyoreo works fine with flamingo's fuser so it's definitely not the fuser. I'm now trying to swap the paper delivery assemblies, but babyoreo's assembly has a stripped screw, and I have no idea how to remove it. I'm working on that now.

cosmojg commented 4 years ago

Okay, I have absolutely no idea how to remove a stripped screw without power tools, and I don't want to accidentally damage our only working printer. I've reassembled babyoreo with its original fuser and printed a few test pages. Everything appears to be working fine. However, without a willing organ transplant recipient, I am unable to test flamingo's paper delivery assembly in isolation.

How do you want to proceed with flamingo? We can try ordering a new paper delivery assembly and replace the one in flamingo, but we would be burning ~$60 if I'm wrong. The exact part is a "HP RM1-8049-000CN Paper delivery assembly" by the way. Oh, and if you're wondering why I think it's this part, it's because flamingo's symptoms match those listed in this support request: https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/LaserJet-Printing/Pro-400-M451-Jamming/td-p/6802384

I'm going to leave flamingo disassembled while I await your response. I plan on coming in before noon tomorrow to either reassemble it or do whatever you tell me to.

Have a good night! Let me know what I should do.

klwadland commented 4 years ago

Depending on the screw you might be able to use pliers of some kind to grip the head and turn the screw normally without using the normal fitting for a screwdriver that's stripped. But that'll depend on if the head is exposed and how well you can grip it.

Is there anything else obvious that might be wrong with Flamingo that could be causing this issue that can be eliminated? This way we'd have a better idea if the paper delivery system really is at fault--though based on the fact that it keeps jamming that would be a very reasonable answer to the problem.

Trust me, I tried all of that and then some for over an hour. The tops of these screws are sloped almost as if the damned things were designed to resist pliers, and on top of that, the screw itself is in a fairly inaccessible location.

There's nothing obvious at all, unfortunately. My diagnosis is based entirely on the behavior of the printer rather than anything appearing physically broken. In fact, the printer is doing the actual printing just fine, all of the requested content makes it onto the page, it simply refuses to spit the paper out when it's done. As described in the support request I linked before, the completed print stops about an inch out of the gate. When you open up the back, you can see that the bottom of the page stopped right as it was exiting a set of pinch rollers below the drum.

Let me know if you have any ideas about other things I can try!

klwadland commented 4 years ago

Ah. That's extremely unfortunate, and as you've discovered, very annoying when trying to swap the part. I agree we shouldn't risk breaking the printer that's currently working.

Based on what you're saying Flamingo is doing (printing fine, but not spitting out the final product) it definitely matches what the support request you linked (for some reason it didn't come through before). I'll check with Eve and see if she has any objection to us getting a replacement part with the possibility it won't fully fix the issue, or if she wants to look into a new printer.

klwadland commented 4 years ago

Thanks! Wanted to make sure I got the right part. Placed the order and once it's approved the order will be submitted to Amazon. The estimated delivery is the first week of September. In the meantime, to prevent printing aggravation, could you please shut off Flamingo and put a sign on it that we're awaiting a part to fix it?

Thanks! I don't have an issue with that as long as there's a sign so people know it's not randomly in pieces, but waiting on a part to arrive.

Thanks! I was actually thinking about this earlier this week. I had a feeling the semester had got away from you a bit and you hadn't had a chance to reassemble it.

I DID IT! I ACTUALLY DID IT! FLAMINGO LIVES!!!

cosmojg commented 3 years ago

I also installed the new cyan and yellow ink cartridges in babyoreo. Both printers are functioning beautifully! Hooray!!!

cosmojg commented 3 years ago

I left the broken paper delivery assembly and spent cyan and yellow ink cartridges on the right side of your desk along with the packaging for their newer counterparts (in case you want to ship them back or something). I also left the new, unopened black and magenta ink cartridges on the left side of your desk (because I didn't know where to put them).
