Abt suggests that it might be interesting, especially in conjunction with 
topcat, to have a distributed high speed search index like 
http://wiki.apache.org/solr/DistributedSearch/ as it supports faceted search.

I (Steve) thinks it might be interesting to use Lucene (the underlying engine 
of solr) and push metadata in each time it is inserted or updated. This would 
be rather easy to do but the resulting index would be completely insecure.
