Poor performance of product creation profile #248

Customers complain that running our product creation profile takes ever.
Hours. Literally.

1. What is the reason?
2. Can we speed it up without bypassing normal product creation routines?

Only questions at this stage. We'll decide what to do with it later.

Please, post links to the code in question from SVN.
