I think google apps scripts can add toolbars and modify cell rendering:

Thanks @7yl4r, the ability to extend Google Sheets looks pretty cool! I don't see an easy option there for formatting markdown with a toolbar, which is why I was going the Shiny route, which is meant as a basic prototype for flexible use across infographic sites. @superjai is in process with baking this functionality into WordPress, which is the preferred way to handle this using a content management system, although for a beefier setup.

:ok_hand: Yeah, I agree with your prototype approach. It looks like an apps script could be a big undertaking.
