I'm trying to wrap my head around how this works. Do I need to do any config to get your sample app to load ads? I'm getting a vague "server returned internal error 0" message.

Here are some errors I'm seeing from output that sound relevant:
[DynamiteModule] Local module descriptor class for com.google.android.gms.ads.dynamite not found.
[Ads] Invoke Firebase method getInstance error.
[Ads] The Google Mobile Ads SDK will not integrate with Firebase. Admob/Firebase integration requires the latest Firebase SDK jar, but Firebase SDK is either missing or out of date
[Ads] Use RequestConfiguration.Builder().setTestDeviceIds(Arrays.asList("***NOTMYACTUALDEVICEID****")) to get test ads on this device.
