Given that some study level aircraft have a great deal of switches and buttons and levers , I am guessing that the 512 limit is not going to be enough for some aircraft
A320 I have identified on a Toliss A320 at least 120 buttons etc just on the left and centre Overhead Panels that you normally use
Now in some situations you may have to switch to the Overhead panel Radio , yes there is one on the Top Right hand and with the other switches on that panel to look at the bottom of the Overhead Panel could use over 200 items.
Going onwards with this and upwards as to speak in the Toliss there are more clickable items in the very top of the Overhead Panel where I counted around 60 circuit breakers that are useable. Now if you set Random Failures or get somebody running the Instructor station you would go to your POH and SOP to deal with that fault , Many of which might need a circuit breaker to be reset.
So being Study Level Realistic which is an extension of the perceived market for Xkeypad then the rest of teh Tolliss A320 when all items are discovered would mean all 512 keys can be used up and still needing more to complete the process.
The suggestion based on the magic number of existing 512 is that it is somewhat connected to binary notation so can you see if you can go to the next step and have 1024 keys
