Sorani module is not listed by And Bible for Document download #154

David:
Currently the Sorani module is not listed by And Bible for Document download!!!
I suspect this is because there is also version 2.0.1 available with
Versification=NRSV, and this is incompatible with And Bible.
I've copied Martin in this reply so that he can explain why I can't see the
other version from CrossWire Main.

Martin:
I just checked and And Bible is printing an Invalid language code error for ckb
- and also for sml, and pon.
I need to investigate as I think it may be a result of optimizing language code
loading.

See also the information provided by DM Smith about JSword.
Forwarded by email - but need not be pasted in this issue.

Hi. My name is Tim. I live and work in Iraqi Kurdistan. I just found the
iphone version of JSword, and then came across And Bible. i was able to
download the ckb for Sorani on an Android phone, but the font definitely has
some issues. Whereas on the iPod touch i'm using, it's perfect. I am not a
programmer at all, but this is very important to me, and i'm willing to be
helpful however i can on this.

Hi Tim,

Android does have many shortcomings in it's internal fonts. However, recent
versions of Android are musch improved. which version of Android do you have?

We also have the ability to link a module to a font in And Bible and
automatically install the font. Is there a (free) font you would normally use
for Sorani?

Hi Martin,

thank you so much for your time and thoughts on this.
My wife's Android phone is 2.3.6.

In terms of fonts that we use. There are quite a few unicode fonts that
available for free. I will attach one that we generally like. But we also
just tend to use some of the fonts within Word or Excel, etc because it is
unicode. So they work great.

Have you ever spoken to Sandy (Iskander) Russell? He leads the IBS branch in
Erbil, the capital city of the Kurdish region of Iraq. Just thought i would
see if you're connected at all because he has worked for a while to hope to see
the sorani bible available on phones.

Thank you so much for what you're doing. This is a really big deal, as some of
the persecuted followers can not carry around an actual bible.

peace,

Tim

Hi Martin,

I got some emails yesterday from a couple people i know and work with regarding
this same issue. I'm wondering if the conversation is happening in two places
at once.

I received an email with a great unicode Kurdish font. I will attach it here.
it is better than either of the ones i previously attached, and i was told it
is free to use.

I would hate to cause this conversation to be duplicated. So i will try to
find out from the other folks if it is the same. And if so, then i will stop
bugging you here and jump into that conversation. Please let me know if you
there is anything else i might help with on this.

Hi Tim,

And Bible fixes and enhancements can be discussed either here or in the And
Bible discussion group, otherwise it is difficult for us to help.

I have fixed the download list problem (part of next release) and downloaded
the Sorani bible to my phone running Android 4.2, which is the latest. Can you
tell me if the attached screen print still exhibits the problem. A lot of font
improvements came as part of Android 4 but there are still many outstanding
problems.

Regards
Martin

Martin,

this looks awesome! it has all of the diacritics right and is easy to read.

I have a couple more questions: Is it still possible to link the sorani to the
font that i attached above and see if that will work on older versions of
Android?

When does the next release come out?

thanks again for your help.

Hi Tim,

The Download Documents fix will be combined with the next release which will
include Split Screen functionality and should be available in a few weeks.

I plan to check several versions of Android so we know roughly when Google made
the Sorani fix.

This isn't just a problem for And Bible and so it may be that many Sorani
mobile providers or users will have already applied a fix for Sorani. This was
the case with Hebrew with providers loading modified versions of Android
supporting Hebrew before Hebrew was well supported by standard Android. Also,
Sorani users will naturally gravitate to Android phones that support Sorani now
it is available.

Currently And Bible does not support distribution of fonts just for older
versions of Android - it's all or nothing - so I would need to modify the code.
Also, I think that shaping or other layout features may be required for Sorani
and merely replacing a font may not be sufficient.

After I have made some more progress with the next release I will come back to
this and do some further tests, but my preference is always to use Google's
fonts if they work.

I don't know if you are aware of these but there seem to be some Sorani tools
available for Android:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=klye.plugin.s2&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=kur.dictionary
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.robtheis.android.phrasebook.xs
.bc

Martin

Here is a screen print from an Android 4.0.3 device using default Android
fonts. There seem to be some unexpected vertical lines in the text.

Here is a screen print from my G1 running Android (Cyanogen) 2.2.1. The
vertical lines are there but now additionally there are also some squares which
represent missing characters.

Now I will try loading the custom abdakre font.

Here is a screen print from my G1 running Android (Cyanogen) 2.2.1 but using
the custom abdakre.ttf font. It looks weird to me. I think something is wrong.

This looks good in terms of the letter marks, but there are 2 issues:

1. it is going left to right! :) (it's backwards)
2. the letters are not "connecting" when they are together. But this may be
due to the fact that it's going L2R.

But the individual letters look great, which is typically the main problem.

Also, in the Android 4 stock font set pic, the vertical lines are always
following the same character. It's the "e", which is represented by the little
circle.

There are a lot of issues discussed above. However, the original issue of
Sorani module not showing up has been resolved. It appears under Kurdish
(central).

Feel free to open specific issues if any problems are outstanding.
