[TASK] Finish the transition from Travis CI to GitHub Actions

• drop the Travis CI configuration files and all references to it
• switch the build status badge to represent the GitHub Actions status

I cannot get the badge to render correctly, and I have no idea what is wrong. I’ll appreciate any help withthat.
