I'm fairly sure (but not certain) that this worked previously. I often name branches with multiple users or multiple documents with a docname/ or user/ prefix to visually segment lists of branches. It appears that pushing a branch named altsvc/references now creates a gh-pages directory named references which does not appear in index.html (presumably because the directory name doesn't match the branch name).
