I saw by coincidence that the maintainer of sphinx-material said that they won't actively maintain the theme anymore and suggests to use sphinx-immaterial instead. So follow the recommendation.
sphinx-immaterial looks mostly the same, even a bit better in some details. Also it seems to be more feature-rich.

While touching the conf.py anyway, I also updated the copyright notice to match with the LICENSE file.
