Validation rejects authors without middle names #43

Closed paulwhaley closed 4 years ago

Hi! I am just trying out tenzing for the first time (first manuscript since you released it). Some of my authors do not have middle names, so I cannot complete the form without the "missing middle name" error message appearing.

This is stopping me generating a CREDIT report using tenzing (although the spreadsheet template was still very helpful).

Hi!

Thank you for using the app and thank you for the feedback. In the template spreadsheet, only one author has a middle name, and the others don't. When using the template spreadsheet the app works fine for me.

Are you sure that the middle name is the problem?

paulwhaley commented 4 years ago

That's what the error message is telling me.

I have attached the file I generated. I haven't entered email address etc. because it feels redundant for the journal - I already enter that about a million times elsewhere.

Maybe it's an error message but for a different field I am supposed to complete.

Hi!

I cannot see the attached file. However, HERE is the list of the checks that the validation code runs.

If the error message says that missing column(s): Middle name, that means that you do not have a Middle name column in your infosheet. All column names have to be the same and present as in the template currently.

I am happy to check your infosheet if you would like to. Just share it with marton.balazs.kovacs@gmail.com

Interesting. I will have another attempt later and let you know how it goes.

I definitely had a middle name column in my spreadsheet. I wonder if something funny happened in conversion to Excel, such as changing the column name or something.

Your CC'd email address should have the sheet.

Thanks! I've checked the template that you used and the problem was that there is no affiliation provided. This throws an error. We are planning to change this behavior on, but in the meantime, if you just want to produce the CRediT table, write some random text in each row in the Primary affiliation column and you are good to go.

paulwhaley commented 4 years ago

Oh right. I thought it might be that, I just hadn't tested it.

I'll toss in some dummy text no problemo. Thanks!

Also for being so responsive. It's a neat tool, thank you! :)

Thank you for following up on this and for using the tool!

Once we can get journals to accept the XML output the app produces you do not have to write the email addresses several times again. :)
