Gareth Ellis (Crickhowell)/ Export meters / AD models / Gas-to-Grid #3

28/06/18 @marygillie: i met with GP Biotec who operate a c. 1MW AD plant in Talgarth. They are very forward looking and open to exploring opportunities to make the most of what they do including community benefit and they showed some interest in Energy Local.

They currently export around 800kW, via 2 gas burning generators and they have approved grid capacity for a third to add another c. 500kW. They understand that the generators operate at low voltage and that the FIT meters are on the LV side. Each generator has its own meters for FIT and export. The export meter is however on the 11kV side. ( in fact I’ve noticed that the main 33kV line that runs through Powys is right next to the generation site so it could even go directly into this 33kV? I don’t know).

Gren and I are planning to meet with the local WPD staff to discuss a few grid things, including the potential to find an 11kV load in the Glasbury substation area - but I suspect that there won’t be one.

There are a couple of questions it would be good to resolve to see if there is any potential here: • Can the existing generators have new export meters on the LV side so they could be used for Energy Local? • If existing cannot be changed, when the new generator comes on line, could this be metered at the LV side? • Each generator exports around 400kW which would mean up to around 800 Club members needed to use it all - do we have any AD models available to use, given that (other than servicing/breakdowns) they can run at 400kW output 24/7? • Since the AD output is pretty much constant and theres plenty available for Club members, the TOUT becomes pretty much redundant - theres always AD available. Would this not reduce potential interest from the Energy Supplier? If they buy/sell at the same price, and Club members need not import any non-match tariff energy, is there any profit/benefit for the Supplier?

Theres huge potential at this site for a lot of renewable work -they are talking about gas-to-grid, district heat mains, heat recovery from the digestive, gas as road fuel etc etc Form previous work in Talgarth, I think that there would be interest in forming a Club. Many people initially objected to the development of the AD plant and so making the energy available via Energy Local would be very positive for all involved.

If the meter went to the LV side then WPD would be responsible for the Transformer I believe. They may not want to do this. They could ask for a new generator. 800 particpants is a lot! don't bite off more than you can chew (mind you perhaps you should get Chris on the case :-) )! In terms of the supplier we have discussed this -it may be that they charge an admin fee instread of sellingpower - this could be quite attractive to them as its pretty risk free.

Thanks Mary - yes don't worry we are way off an 800 member club, but GP are really keen to explore community-facing options so worth having the answers. An admin fee would seem a straightforward solution. I assume that there is no EL model spreadsheet available yet for AD?

No but as its a straight output it shouldn'tbe hard to do.
