pre payment meters #31

We have been getting a lot of questions about prepayment meters and struggling to answer them fully.

I understand that those on prepayment meters can't join the club but why not? And are there any circumstances when they can (eg. customers who opted into prepayment meters and don't have bad credit history)?

Also for customers not on prepayment meter, can they opt for prepayment under EL? i have seen prepayment smart meters are available

Hi Nick,

The reason we can't have prepayment customers is a technical issue rather than one related to credit history etc. I believe that the problem is that we don't know what their share of the hydro would be at the time they are using their electricity (this is worked out retrospectively) so the challenge is how much they would be billed. Is that correct Mary?

This is something that EL want to be able to do in the future, but cannot do yet.
It wouldn't be possible at present for a customer to opt to have a PPM.

One thing that I would like to confirm following a query, is whether a customer with a PPM can have it removed by Coop and replaced with an advanced meter and therefore be able to join the scheme that way.

We are working on this over the next 9 months.  Along the way we hope to become more meter agnostic as well.
