I have to think whether Garamond, a source of inspiration for Cormorant and Crimson Text, fits the theme of Japanese gardens.
For the time being, we go with Cormorant Garamond. Its thin weight may be related to the zen principle of emphasizing nothing.
Japanese letters back in those days are all calligraphic. Thus, a serif font with some idiosyncrasies of the designer's touch would be ideal.
Cormorant Garamond, the version of Cormorant for text, has a diagonal hyphen, resembling the Japanese kanji character for number one, and the right leg of capital R is similar to that of many Japanese kanji characters.
Cormorant Garamond Regular (font-weight: 400) looks thin for the body text. We instead use its Medium weight (500).
Among the top 40 Google Fonts chosen by Typewolf, the following is Old Style Serif
Cardo - Not too bad. Inknut Antiqua - Doesn't work. Libre Baskerville "In my opinion, it’s one of the highest-quality serifs available from Google Fonts" (Typewolf) Cormorant "heavily inspired by Claude Garamont's immortal legacy" Crimson Text
Among these, Crimson Text feels the best, though it may look a bit boring. Next comes Cormorant though its weight is a bit too thin. Libre Baskervill is somehow off.
