Mastodon is not the only service in the fediverse. #22477

alsternerd commented 1 year ago

Steps to reproduce the problem

  1. Open any instance.
  2. Look at "$INSTANCE_NAME is part of the decentralized social network powered by Mastodon."
  3. Open this Issues.

The instance using Mastodon is part of ActvityPub and the Fediverse, which do not only consist of Mastodon.

Expected behaviour

"$INSTANCE_NAME is part of the decentralized social network powered by ActivityPub and using Mastodon."

Actual behaviour

$INSTANCE_NAME is part of the decentralized social network powered by Mastodon.

Detailed description

Mastodon is not the only social network in the Fediverse using ActivityPub and should rather point out that the server is using the protocol ActivityPub and running or using Mastodon as software.

Specifications

All browsers, all Mastodon webinterfaces.

I would suggest to add the name of the network, too:

"$INSTANCE_NAME is part of the decentralized social network Fediverse powered by ActivityPub and using Mastodon."

@hikerus There's no official social network named "Fediverse", it's just a community term for an ecosystem of platforms and apps that use ActivityPub, so I don't think that wording makes sense. Maybe you could could "part of a decentralized social network (aka 'the fediverse')".

"$INSTANCE_NAME is powered by Mastodon and is part of a larger decentralized social network"

@ineffyble I don't agree. Fediverse is more than a "community term" - there is even a Wikipedia article. The "Fediverse" is the network of all the server (instances) which are connected with ActivityPub protocol - exactly as the graphic in Wikipedia shows. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fediverse

eh, you wouldn't say "the decentralized social network Email". people back in the 2000s made many references to "the blogosphere" but it wouldn't make sense to refer to "the Blogosphere network". and one could even extend the argument further -- "Mastodon is not the only service in the fediverse" --> "ActivityPub is not the only protocol in the fediverse". these are all technicalities. as far as an unaware user is concerned, there are two facts to present to them:

  1. this server is running Mastodon
  2. you can talk to people on other servers
