I'm not sure if this a netspeed problem or network-manager. Fedora 20 with mate desktop. The monitored connection is em1 but there is no indication of traffic. I have this issue with system-monitor too.

I am running the Arch Linux, MATE 1.6, mate-netspeed-applet 1.6.0 and Network Manager 0.9.8.8. I am monitoring eth0 and mate-netspeed-applet and mate-system-monitor are correctly monitoring the traffic. I can't reproduce your issue. @NiceandGently can you reproduce?

I think this is a problem with the alx network driver. It also shows up using ifconfig, i.e., ifconfig doesn't work either.   I entered the issue in fedora bugzilla . I thought I had gone back and updated this report. I guess not. Sorry .

@infirit - This is not a MATE issue. Please close.

@pkands I got same ethernet card and I found the issue is fixed on kernel 3.14: http://git.kernel.org/cgit/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux.git/commit/drivers/net/ethernet/atheros/alx?id=b7e6ce18cb361064c35394cdb81def8c293732a0
