1 year ago I was unable to duplicate this on Debian Unstable: dragging 4 files to a folder in a different FS (forcing a copy job) generated text in the dialog that 4 files were being copied. Note that if one file had been small enough, it could have finished before the dialog could open, in which case the remaining number of files to be copied would be displayed as intended.
I notice one of your test files was only 32 bytes, that would copy almost instantly unless there was an FS write slowdown like what commonly happens with a busy flash drive

draging 4 files to another caja windows - expecting "4 files" in message
Actual behaviour
message displays "3 files"
