desktop icon sizes and text rows #278

i was looking to change the icon sizes on the desktop and when i open up 'file management preferences' and see if i adjust the 'icon view defaults' zoom level, it will adjust the desktop icon size. it would have been nice to have another tab here just for desktop features or alternatively have it in the control panel's 'desktop settings' app. well i was changing the zoom level and noticed that it would not set it to the level that i'm currently on, but would set it to the level i was previously one. so if i set it to 33%, then set it again to 50%, it would then set the icons to 50%, and if then i set it to 100%, then it would set the icons to 50%. this was tested on caja 1.7.0 and i'm downloading the mate arch iso to test it there was well.

another issue i had with the desktop was that icon texts would stretch for maximum 3 rows and this causes problems for icon alignment as icon texts can have 1, 2 or 3 rows. so is there a means of limiting it to 2 rows, while always having the spacing between icons aligned for 2 rows. i have also noticed that the desktop 'keep aligned' setting doesnt keep them enclosed in a specific box and align them that way, something i'm used to from windows xp, and wondered if there is a means of setting this.

i forgot to also ask how to disable thumbnails from desktop icons.

i see that in the 'preview' tab i can set to disable previews, but i only want it for the desktop, primarily because the previews are larger than other icons on the desktop.

you can set thumbnails size in GSettings

where can i find gsettings, but i'd prefer just disabling thumbnails on the desktop if possible.

well i verified that the problem of the switching of icon view defaults zoom level is still present in the mate 1.8 + arch iso.

Alternative suggestion: It will be good enough if I can adjust the zoom level inside Caja for the $HOME/Desktop folder and get that setting be reflected on the desktop outside. They are viewing the same folder so it make sense for their zoom level be in sync. No new metadata needed.
