The application will stream the selected monitor if the mutter screencast portal is available. If it is unavailable, a fallback to X11 based frame grabbing will happen. As such, it should work fine in almost all setups.
GNOME Screencaster implementing Wi-Fi Display (aka Miracast). https://github.com/benzea/gnome-screencast For what I can tell it also uses a some integration with mutter, not sure what that entails but supporting gnome-screencast under MATE would be nice.
