Just to be clear, you are talking about the menu when clicking on the notification icon, right?
Yes

This would be nice, but over the summer I tested adding separate mic and output recording volume control options. It worked, but overall problems with cut icons in the tray that may be ain issue in GtkPlug itself showed up frequently from adding and removing the icons. Since GtkPlug doesn't work in Wayland and is deprecated by GNOME, it gets very little maintainance. There is an indicator for sound controls (one in Ubuntu and also an Ayatana applet) but as indicators can only pop up menus all sliders have to be horizontal, packed into menuitems
@lukefromdc the only other project that caught my attention was https://github.com/christophgysin/pasystray
I would be very nice.
Currently, the volume control applet is only able to control the global volume level (and only up to 100%). It would be nice if it could take advantage of current sound systems and control individual application volumes directly from the applet. Another idea is to control specific output devices.
Something like this: https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/858/volume-mixer/ Or this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Sound#menu Or this: https://code.google.com/p/veromix-plasmoid/wiki/Screenshots
