clock applet doesn't show weather and temperature on panel #25

Closed Franko3 closed 12 years ago

Franko3 commented 12 years ago

When I right click on clock and choose preferences, select locations and choose my location and then choose general tab and check weather and temperature - nothing happens. In earlier Linux distributions with gnome 2 applet works as it should. I only see that there is creating a space on the left side on the clock when i check weather and temperature and is removing when I uncheck it.

Is it a bug?

it should works... which distribution/repository do you use?

Franko3 commented 12 years ago

well but it doesn't at least here :) I'm using Linux Mint Debian Edition 201204 - standard repos included in distribution.

stefano-k commented 12 years ago

can you try with another location?

Franko3 commented 12 years ago

Thank you for your responses. Changing locations doesn't help.

I hope I was clear enough with this issue so I decided to attach a link to a picture of the mate-panel to show you what's wrong. I have marked on red the place where according to me should shows temperature and weather. In Linux Mint 12 it works and also in Linux Mint 9 with Gnome 2.30.2.

It didn't show up for me at first either. Then I rebooted and it was working? Have you rebooted since you attempted to get it working?

Franko3 commented 12 years ago

Unfortunately it is my fresh install and i did reboot many times to this day. It still doesn't shows up. But I have some supposition. Does mate-panel uses NetworkManager? I have an internet via usb adsl-modem from my provider and I use pppd to connect with internet using my own script. I also use the pidgin as my default IM client. Unfortunately when I have an internet via pppd, pidgin and some other applications didn't seen connections. Pidgin only displays message awaiting connection. For that reason I did following command and pidgin have connected with my IM accounts: chmod -x /usr/sbin/NetworkManager

My question is does clock-applet uses NetworkManager to display temperature and weather and is there any other way to display those?

I'm sorry if i'm not fully understandable.

Did anyone could confirm this issue? Am I only one with this issue?

Franko3 commented 12 years ago

Should this work on Linux Mint RC 13? I just downloaded LM RC and start it in VirtualBox. Same issue. Or it isn't an issue?

xpander69 commented 12 years ago

im on mint 13 rc and do not have that issue. didnt have that issue with mint 12 and tridex repo also.

stefano-k commented 12 years ago

@Franko3 can you try the separate mateweather applet?

Franko3 commented 12 years ago

i do not remember did i have that issue on mint 12 with mate but i didn't have with gnome classic...

Edit: Now that something interesting. I removed default clock and added another one. Same situation. Next I click locations and expand it. I saw a button "set" near my chosen location. When I click it a dialog with password input shows up. I entered my root password - a message shows up that error occured with applet. I reloaded it and Voilà. It works now :)

I do not remember did I do the same on LM 12 but anyway it works. Thank you for your support. I close this issue because at least for me it's no more issue.

Thanks all.

I think if you left-click on the clock applet a calendar window drops down. At the bottom of this window is an arrow labeled "Locations". Left-click on the arrow drops down a global map window with a button labeled "Edit". After clicking the edit button and selecting your location at the bottom of this window, there will appear a "Set" button to the right of the location you have selected. Once this lacation is "Set" as your "Home" location, the weather icon will appear on the clock applet.

This is the same procedure that was used for Gnome 2. For my Salix-13.37-MATE installation, gome-polkit needs to be installed for non-root user to be granted authority to change time settings. The setting of the home location does not persist in a new session, however. This is a minor annoyance, but one that could be addressed, I presume, since it worked for Gnome 2.
