Actual behaviour
Occasionally I notice a system slowdown and see my HD light on continuously. The culprit (found via iotop) is this daemon. Killing this process immediately stops my HD thrashing. I have let it run for multiple minutes before and it does not seem to reach a point where it self-resolves.
