One can switch from an Xorg screen to a linux console using Ctrl-Alt-F1 ... Ctrl-Alt-F6 hotkeys. When switching back to the Xorg session, it is expected that the screen resolution is restored.
Actual behaviour
The first time after launching the Xorg session, it does not work. Set the resolution back manually via control center / displays and then switching back and forth between Linux consoles and the Xorg session will work flawlessly - until the next time when the Xorg session is started.
Steps to reproduce the behaviour
I set my Linux console resolution to 1920x1080 using grub. That resolution is the maximum which is supported according to grub's VESA mode list. For Xorg, I added a script to /etc/X11/Xsession.d to add my X11 resolution of 3840x2160 via xrandr because Xorg does not recognize that the 4K resolution is available (which may have to do with the fact that I am running under VMware). Anyway, the mate session starts up fine and once I have selected the 3840x2160 resolution it always comes up using that resolution. Then I switch to a Linux console, which changes the resolution to 1920x1080. That's the way it is supposed to be. Then when I switch back to Xorg, the mate session all in a sudden runs in 1920x1080! I then go to control center / display and correct the resolution back to 3840x2160. From now on, I can switch back and forth between the Xorg session and the Linux consoles as often as I want; mate will always come back in 3840x2160. However, if I shutdown the Xorg session and start it up fresh, the problem is back. First time I switch to a Linux console and then back to Xorg, mate is keeping the Linux console resolution instead of switching back to its own resolution.
