Mate-themes-extras - Blue-Submarine/Green-Submarine Themes break menu functionality in apps using GTK3+ #73

If I use either Blue-Submarine or Green Submarine GTK+ themes in MATE-Desktop, or even in GNOME Shell, I get the following loss of functionality in menus. Pictures follow.

screenshot-backups

screenshot-gedit

screenshot-world weather

When this occurs, I cannot click menus and have them work. I still can use the keyboard to activate these greyed-out menu items but the mouse does not work in them at all. These apps are not the only ones affected but they are a representative subset. If I use any other theme for GTK, I get working menus again that can be clicked and work.

Both 1.8 and 1.9 mate-themes-extras packages are affected. Downgrading and upgrading makes no difference.

better you file out a bug against gnome-weather ;)

I do not have a problem with gnome-weather, and no missing dependencies on my system. It works fine for me--unless I use either Blue-Submarine or Green-Submarine Mate-extras themes. I get messages about deprecated this or that but there is no loss of functionality unless I use those two themes.

While I agree as to stablility issues with gnome-apps, each time a feature of mate-desktop hits the chopping block I am forced into using yet either another gnome app or another app with less features. First, there was mate-character map, and a couple others. Users got stuck with using gucharmap and the like. Next on the chopping block is mate-calc, forcing use of either galculator (with less features) or gnome-calculator (or force-installing mate-calc again). Gnome-calculator has the same issue as the apps above, but only if Blue-Submarine or Green-Submarine mate-desktop themes are used.

By dropping/substituting apps users are being forced to use gnome apps or apps with less functionality. All users who find themselves needing to use such apps are going to hit this wall.

mate-calc isn't drop in fedora F20/f21

dcharlespyle commented 10 years ago

I got the "Package mate-calc has been obsoleted by..." message not too long ago. I had to force install it again after rebuilding the package myself to get rid of that message. But, mate-calc is going away, meaning it will have to be replaced either by a gnome app or another with less functionality, just like mate-character-map and a couple other apps before that.
