Ongoing collected thoughts about using Materials Commons for project management #1196

We're starting to use Materials Commons to coordinate the new Complex Alloy Use Case. I thought that I'd open an issue to record my experience as I go. I'll start separate issues for specific bugs/etc. This is more for general impressions. @gtarcea @Terry-Weymouth let me know if there's a different way you'd like me to do this.

The project I created: https://materialscommons.org/mcapp/#/project/b02b9723-6b17-46a5-a839-13e10cd3915a/home

  1. What I've used it for so far: a place to post meeting notes and action items

  2. Comment: There is no way to add notes or tasks for a whole project. The meeting was for the whole use case so I had initially planned to post the notes/tasks on the project level. Instead, I decided to create a "Use Case Management" experiment and put the notes/tasks in there. This breaks the analogy of experiments, but seems to work ok. I understand that having a mix of project-level notes/tasks and experiment-level notes/tasks could become a mess.

  3. Comment: It struck me that there's no way to view notes and tasks at the same time. If someone wants to see if there are any new notes or any new action items, they'd have to click to change views. There's a way to add tasks from the "Notes" page, but not a way to view them. One possibility would be to have a combined notes/tasks page that is divided into three parts: a list of notes, the contents of the selected note, and the list of tasks.

  4. Comment: It'd be nice if there was an automated way to send a notification to the other members of the use case to tell them that I added content to the project. I wouldn't want something to go out every time that someone makes a change, because that would be overwhelming. But some sort of a "broadcast this update" would be helpful. For now, I'll just send emails to the members of the use case to let them know.

  5. Comment: It might be helpful to record who created notes and tasks. That way if someone sees something posted and has a question, they know who to direct it to.

  6. Question: Are people notified when they get added to a project? If not, that might be a good idea.

Related to point 3 above, I've often found that I want to have multiple browser tabs open for the same project, but I have to re-login for each tab. The ability to open into a different tab would be very useful.

@bpuchala @stvdwtt @gtarcea needs to be reviewed, and broken into "bugs", "feature requests", and "neat ideas for future consideration" - and then prioritized in a general meeting. In the mean time, I've put it into our "Planned" list.
