kotlin support in markdown documents is missing

I have not used this plugin before but according to this fix https://github.com/mathiasfrohlich/vscode-kotlin/issues/6 I would expect that the following section is highlighted in the editor of an .md file:

var x=3

It doesn't nor any other text I place inside.
