@ajhyndman Yes some cases where placeholders used to appear seem to have disappeared. You are welcome to throw up another card, especially if we see feedback arising from similar cases.

I seem to only achieve the bad latex state through editing. I've not tried pasting, but does your method result in the same invalid latex state? Regardless I'm not too interested in supporting that unless we feedback on that.

I can't find any previous versions that have this placeholder behaviour, so I'll go ahead and merge. Do you want to set up the PR against mathspace/mathspace repo?
