I saw recently where you were disheartened by nextcloud integrating recognize and that you saw it as competition. It isn't competition, it doesn't even come close. Recognize will only recognize people who have profile pics if I understand correctly, and so far it has failed to recognize my very own face while your app just works. Recognize it a whiz at kind of trying to tag objects and as far as I'm concerned that is all it is good for. To get what I want I need both apps but they are for very different purposes. I hope that you keep at this, it is the only face recognition option really going for self hosters and is what made me finally decide to move out of google photos.
The setup was pretty arduous and it made me question the value of keeping all these photos and ultimately even made me question the purpose of taking any photos and life in general but I'm past that terrible week now so I would like to keep it going XD
