In Dashboard Search, add metrics to the Searchbar results. #21267

Expected: Entering "Bounce" into the dashboard searchbar will return more than zero results.

Actual: Entering "Bounce" into the search of the navbar returns zero results.

Return on investment: A certain type of user (me!) sees from the search results that "Matomo cannot measure bounce", due to results like the screenshot above. This is misleading: Matomo is great with Bounce.

Here is another example. Again, keep in mind a naive or newbie user. Matomo does not measure "unique", seemingly:

This was requested by a user in the user feedback in August 2023:

Matomo: Which of these parts of the dashboard should Matomo prioritize for improvement? Customer: I’ll think the search-funktion - I’d never used it because I don’t know where or what ist search for.

Could the search extend to parts of the Admin section also?

The context specific help text in the gray boxes is great: some of the best concise documentation of our entire product. It would be nice if this (screenshot) were discoverable when am trying to find the setting for ignoring URL parameters. image

I was just going to log an annoyance when I found this. The search bar does not seem to find results for a variety of search terms. I'd imagine users giving up once they don't see this working. Or we need to document what search terms are actually in scope to search.

I get the idea of the ticket, and agree it needs addressing. However, the scope is pretty unclear to me. Keen to hear if there's any concrete thoughts with what should/shouldn't be added to the search results.

@sgiehl you might have some thoughts on it?

sgiehl commented 1 year ago

In theory we could make anything "searchable". Like name of reports, menu entries, dimensions, metrics. So that strongly depends on the needs. Depending on the requirements we should then investigate each additional search feature and see how easy it would be to make it searchable.

It would be useful if the search bar could return Admin Pages, for example typing General Settings and clicking it would go to the page. This would make user's live a lot easier to navigate Matomo.

Thanks for asking. My feature request is, in Dashboard, add all metrics to the Searchbar results.

Right now, the searchbar can't find the things that Matomo measures. So first part is to make the table columns searchable: image

And the second part is to make the non tabular metrics also searchable. (Are non tabular metrics too different though? I don't know how they are built under-the-hood.

This seems like a logical request. It's annoying to have a search bar that doesn't search well. I agree that this is an important feature to have.

This would solve two newbie's obstacles: 1) "Where in Matomo do you measure xyz?" or worse "Matomo cannot measure xyz, why!?" (Imagine my frustration when users can't find referrer or conversion and they think Matomo does not have it.) 2) Users latch on to Visitors >> Visits Log view and use that as a main source of info, rather than the same stat in Reports, where we add useful tools. Typical email: "What I like the most is visitors' log report - it helps to understand user behavior on the site and find problem areas." This is not the correct way to use Matomo. Visits Log is not where a power user is supposed to be hanging out. Newbies like it because they don't know any better. This story, above, would help them explore Matomo, get them out of the insular view of Visits Log
