I'm finding it interesting that this hasn't so far attracted much attention. The general workaround appears to be just calling endpoints and then reacting to 404 responses if they are unsupported (see e.g. https://matrix.org/docs/spec-guides/authed-media-servers/). I assume this is considered less of an issue for servers as compared to clients because network requests should usually be much cheaper?
