Updates silently fail #751

I'm trying to update from v2.1.0-beta to v2.1.4-beta. The update is offered but trying to do the update doesn't seem to do anything.

My unproven suspicion is that it's maybe a permissions problem - I don't generally run as an administrator and expect a lot of this sort of thing to cause a prompt for an administrator username and password but this doesn't happen. Nothing happens - no new window or error message.

I can see in Activity Monitor that it has downloaded the right amount of data for an update, but then the update process seems to cease.

I haven't seen anything obvious in console messages about what the problem might be either.

I'll manually do an update for now of course.

@eddedmondson thanks for reporting this. The autoupdate isn't quite right yet, but I wonder, when you re-run xbar after a 'failed' update, which version do you have? The new one, or the old one? I just released v2.1.5 so please try now (v2.1.4 has new update code)

Hi, I'm currently on 2.1.4-beta. On attempting update to 2.1.6-beta it says 'update successful' but restarting after that leaves me still on 2.1.4-beta. I'll switch over to v2.1.5 now manually.

v2.1.5-beta behaves similarly, offering to update to 2.1.6-beta then saying "update successful", but on restart it's still v2.1.5-beta.

@eddedmondson Did this get resolved with later update code?

eddedmondson commented 2 years ago

I don't recall it having worked, and I'm currently on 2.1.7-beta which is up to date so I can't check as it is.
