use sparse matrix #289

Okay, the speedup isn't 10x like I had said, but rather 5x on a dataset of size 100. It seems less on larger datasets, but, in any case, this looks like a cheap way to get a bit faster.

Looks like my tests favored sparse matrices more than the real data. Closing this and going back to the drawing board.
