After reading about Normal maps I stumbled upon this thread that talked about how to properly create a normal map for CS by inverting the X-axis in the construction process. After some experimenting I've found that one thing to keep in mind when using the "normalmap" plugin in GIMP is to scale the map into a negative (e.x. -10 not +10). This in combination with inverting X works as intended.
All of the released and currently under development assets need to be reconstructed with fixed normal maps.
