No activity indications on the sidebar when collapsed reply threads are enabled

Summary

When collapsed threads are enabled, no sidebar indications exist for new messages in channels.

Steps to reproduce

Mattermost version 9.3.0.

Expected behavior

When new posts happen in channels, an indication in the sidebar (left side) should exist to denote activity in the channel, despite being part of a thread or not (like the non collapsed reply threads feature).

Observed behavior (that appears unintentional)

No indications exist on the sidebar. I have to switch my display settings to non collapsed reply threads to see if I missed messages.

I get that mentions and threads I'm following should do the trick, but there are channels that someone is just an observer. The workaround for this is to enable "Notification Preferences > Auto-follow all new threads in this channel", but this has to be done manually for every channel. Plus, it defies the purpose if you want to just observe activity (not be part of the thread).

Possible fixes

• Possibly add an indication of unread messages in the channel, as it is without enabling the collapsed reply threads.
• Or at least make the "Auto-follow all new threads in this channel" a global setting, not having to do it for every single channel?
