Unsaved buffer tab symbol shows as rectangle/unrecognized

When I modify *scratch*, a symbol appends the tab name. This symbol displays as a rectangle/unrecognized on my machine.

It has to do with the font. Do you want a symbol to display? Or do you want to be able to customize this symbol?

Nothing fancy. Maybe italicize the tab name?

Now the tab-name is italicized. Previously it was was converted to bold.
