Earlier, demos were hard to narrate, because the windows lacked a clear label about who was who.

This PR is starting to address that, and is revealing other issues in the logic and organization of state with respect to the IC-MT protocol.

Still, this PR gives some modest improvements for the demo today.

CI is broken because some azure IP address is down for the debian build process. Hmm.
