Currently, the 'chords' field can contain text with interlinear chords written above the exact word or syllable that uses the new chord. Basically, that is the format that the user should see, but it is not a format that is easy to handle with regards to the changing of the key the whole song is written in.
That's why the 'onsong' format was invented - it contains the lyrics with the keys (chords) in the middle of a word and enclosed in square brackets.
