I noticed this, too. In my first few tests the show was written to /tmp, then
encoded,
then copied to the specified destination (a different disk, in my case). When
I turned off
subtitles, this stopped happening. Now it seems to be encoding directly from
the
network stream. My mini can't encode as fast as it can download anyway (sad, I
know,
given how slow TiVos download), but at least now I'm not waiting for the
download.

I see now in formats.plist that downloading first is required by some encoders
(HandBrake).
So, there are some cases where pipelining is needed even if you aren't
extracting
subtitle info.
