Apple TV Freezes after playing h.264 video, medium setting, converted TiVo file

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. I am encoding iTiVo content (from TiVo) with h.264 medium encode, defaults.
2. The video plays on my AppleTV, but when a video file ends... the AppleTV 
freezes.
3. After 5 minutes, the AppleTV reboots.
4. This happens frequently.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Expected:  To return to menu to select a new video.
Instead:  ATV remains frozen and the unit is inoperable until it reboots.  
Running diagnostics 
says ATP is OK.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Latest version as of today (auto-update ran a few days ago, updating to current 
version)

O.S is windows vista with iTunes 8.0.2.20

Please provide any additional information below.

have you tried using either the appleTV or the handbrake appleTV settings?
  sounds like appleTV doesn't like the h.264 encode...

Yes, I have used Apple TV setting.   That works much better.   I just reset my 
Prefs.  I can't remember if the ATV 
setting results in .m4v   (I want to retain the option of editing).
